Alexandria Audio

There is no shortage of loudspeakers that impress in the first five minutes and exhaust you in the first five weeks. Alexandria Audio was founded in Bali, Indonesia in 2019, by Kenneth Lin and Henry Kristanto, to build the other kind: equipment that lets the system disappear and the music arrive — night after night, record after record, without effort and without apology.
We hold three convictions, and every product must answer to all of them.
Controlled dispersion. A loudspeaker does not perform into an anechoic chamber; it performs into your room, with its glass, its tile, its bookshelf on one side and bare wall on the other. The Atrium directs its energy at the listener and withholds it from the side walls — which means the room contributes less of its own commentary, and the recording keeps its spatial cues, the placement of players, the sense that a voice is there rather than smeared across the wall. This is why an Alexandria speaker can be asked to work in a living room, near walls, in the house you actually inhabit: the design assumes your room, not a laboratory.
Linear impedance. Most loudspeakers present their amplifier with a load that lurches from easy to punishing several times per octave — and the amplifier, forced to negotiate every lurch, gives up a little composure at each one. The Atrium's impedance holds close to 8 ohms across the band, never falling below 7.6 ohms: the amplifier sees, in effect, one steady task instead of forty shifting ones. The practical consequence is freedom — a small single-ended tube amplifier of 8 watts drives the Atrium with the same unruffled authority as a large solid-state design, and your choice of amplification becomes a matter of taste rather than survival.
Adjustability. No two rooms are alike, and no two pairs of ears are either. Rather than voice one balance and hope, the Atrium carries a four-position treble adjustment — fine, quarter-decibel steps — so that its top end can be matched to a lively room, a damped one, or simply to your preference. The customer pays a great deal of money for a loudspeaker at this level; the customer deserves its best performance in their room, not ours.
And because conviction is cheap without verification: every Atrium passes a 20-point quality-control inspection and is then tested for 24 hours — played, measured, and auditioned — before it is boxed. Not a sample from the batch. Every unit.
PART II — THE FOUNDER
Henry Kristanto

Henry Kristanto did not come to loudspeakers from audio retail or an engineering faculty. He came from the workshop floor. His family built high-end furniture in Indonesia, and his early working life ran through buildings, construction, and interiors — followed by years on the factory floors of southern China's manufacturing heartland, hunting down small specialist workshops, studying aluminium extrusion, CNC machining, kiln-drying chambers, and the patient, unglamorous choreography of a true piano-gloss finish: spray, oven, spray, oven, then sanding in descending grades until the final pass is done with water. Long before he built a serious loudspeaker, he knew — from standing next to the people who did it — what it costs to make a cabinet properly.
The Yardstick — Live Music
Here is the thing that separates Henry's seven Sydney years from a decade of forum reading: he kept a reference, and the reference was alive. Twice a month, minimum, for years, he sat in a small jazz room across the road from his university and listened to working musicians play — a double bass with real wood in its tone, a ride cymbal with actual metal in it, a voice at conversational distance. He went to theatres for touring acts and to the concert hall for the orchestral repertoire. None of these rooms was perfect; some of the equipment in them was frankly ordinary. That was the point. Live music in real rooms is unglamorous, uneven, and unmistakably true — and every speaker Henry built went home to be measured against that truth, revised, and built again.
This was never armchair speaker design. It was a loop, run continuously for seven years: hear the real thing on Thursday, build on Saturday, measure on Sunday, listen against memory, find the shortfall, change the crossover, change the cabinet, change the driver — and go hear the real thing again. Conclusions were not adopted from other people's opinions; they were purchased, cut on a table saw, wired, measured, auditioned, and — more often than not — discarded.
The Awakening
One listening session bent the whole trajectory. A friend invited him to hear a pair of Altec A7 Voice of the Theatre loudspeakers — enormous, decades out of fashion, about as domestic as a forklift. Henry had heard modern horn speakers before and been left cold. The Altecs were something else entirely: the music was easy. It reached him without strain, and that ease let him stop auditing the equipment and simply follow the playing.
If the music does not reach the listener effortlessly, the design is not finished.
That became the criterion for everything since — and the beginning of a long campaign to get that ease out of cabinets a household could live with. More than a dozen horn profiles were bought, built, measured, and compared, along with waveguides in every geometry and high-frequency drivers of every persuasion; an expensive, elaborate three-way was built with premium parts throughout, and was beaten — decisively, and by the unanimous verdict of audiophile friends who travelled interstate to listen — by a far simpler two-way horn system wearing plain, inexpensive crossover components. The lesson stuck, and it runs through every Alexandria product: expensive parts are not the design. The design is the design — and the money belongs in the drivers and the engineering, not the jewelry.
Those visiting friends kept saying the same sentence, unprompted: the first horn that isn't honky or aggressive — just enjoyable. A sentence repeated often enough becomes a company.
PART III — THE ROAD TO THE ATRIUM
One Obsession, Three Scales

Every Alexandria loudspeaker is the same quest rendered at a different size: the ease and dynamic life of a great horn system, without the bulk, the coloration, or the placement fussiness that horns traditionally demand.
The Monitor shrank the whole experience into a standmount that plays with the dynamic contrast of something twice its size. The Praetoria realized the horn ideal in a modern, producible floorstander — genuine horn loading, high sensitivity, a cabinet built on our resonance-management construction, and treble controls that let it settle into any room.
The Atrium is the Praetoria's philosophy rendered slim. Everything the Praetoria stands for — effortless dynamics, controlled dispersion, an amplifier-friendly load, a managed-resonance cabinet, fine treble adjustment — compressed into a 28-centimetre-wide column that stands near walls and disappears into a living room. Its breakthrough sits at the top of the cabinet: after years of searching for a high-frequency driver that could do what only horns had done, Henry found one — the first tweeter he judged to come genuinely close. The Atrium was designed around it.
PART IV — INSIDE THE ATRIUM
Design & Features

The Tweeter — 45 mm Dual Piston
The Atrium's high-frequency driver is neither a conventional dome nor a ribbon. It is a dual-diaphragm design: a small coated textile dome carrying the uppermost octaves, concentrically joined to a 45 mm rigid cone that supplies output, efficiency, and body through the lower treble — two diaphragms acting as one acoustic source. Behind them sit dual neodymium magnets, a copper shorting element in the motor for low distortion, and a damped die-cast rear chamber. In front, a short waveguide marries its dispersion to the woofer's, so the transition between the two drivers is heard as no transition at all.
Two numbers explain why this driver behaves, subjectively, like a miniature horn. The first: response extending to 45 kHz — more than an octave beyond the limit of hearing, which means the octave you can hear is delivered by a driver loafing, not straining. The second: 180 watts of continuous power handling (IEC 268-5), 450 watts long-term. Consider that a conventional home-audio tweeter withstands perhaps 50 watts, and that even the sturdiest rarely clear 100 — and that the Atrium asks its tweeter for only a fraction of a watt at normal listening levels. The result is a treble driver with reserves it will never be asked to spend: cymbals keep their metal and their weight at any level you choose, brass crescendos arrive with the ease of the real thing, and the top end never hardens — because it is never, even for a moment, near its limit.
The Woofer — Proprietary 220 mm, High Transient
The bass-midrange driver is a bespoke design owned by Alexandria Audio. It appears in no catalogue and no other loudspeaker, because it was developed for this one — a high-sensitivity paper cone, iterated until its midrange met our reference, with a free-air resonance of just 25 Hz: remarkably low for a high-sensitivity 220 mm driver, and the foundation of deep, composed bass from a slim enclosure.
Its defining trait is that it is a high-transient driver — a light, stiff moving system with a powerful motor, built to start and stop the instant the signal does. What that means at the listening seat is not a specification but a set of sensations: the pluck of a double-bass string arrives as a distinct event — the finger, then the note, then the wood — rather than one rounded thud; a kick drum has skin and air in it, not just weight; a piano's left hand keeps its percussive edge under the sustain. Music lives in its leading edges — the first few milliseconds of every note carry the player's touch — and a driver that smears those milliseconds smears the musician. This one does not. The bass is tuned for minimum group delay, so what starts fast also lands on time.
The crossover to the tweeter sits at 2.1 kHz, and the woofer is mounted on a chamfered baffle that suppresses edge diffraction — small geometric courtesies that keep spatial cues intact and let performers hold their positions.
The Cabinet — Managed Resonance
Every cabinet has a sound. This is not a controversy; it is physics, and the industry has spent decades answering it in one of three ways: ignore it, bury it under mass and damping until the box is inert, or simply swap one fashionable panel material for another and call the job done. The Atrium takes a fourth path, and it is the harder one.
We call it managed resonance, and the word doing the work is managed — not damped, not deadened, not eliminated. The trouble with a conventional box is not that it resonates; it is that it resonates in agreement with itself. Panels of the same material, the same thickness, and the same construction share the same resonant behavior, and when they are rigidly joined, that shared behavior reinforces itself — one signature, amplified by every surface at once, laid over your music like a stamp.
The Atrium breaks the agreement with materials. Its enclosure is built from three substances that could hardly be less alike: plywood, aluminium, and synthetic leather. This is not decoration, and it is not the fashionable trick of swapping one wood panel for a more expensive wood panel — a move that changes the cabinet's accent without changing what it says. These three materials were chosen because their resonant behaviors are fundamentally different in kind, and a structure assembled from fundamentally different behaviors cannot reach consensus on any note.
Each material earns its place. Plywood — laminated, cross-grained — forms the structure: stiff, strong, and already less inclined to ring than a homogeneous board, because every layer within it answers vibration slightly differently than its neighbours. Aluminium resonates in another register entirely — far removed from where wood lives — so where the metal meets the wood, vibration arrives at a border where its passport is no longer valid: energy that would propagate freely through an all-wood box is reflected, scattered, and diminished at every dissimilar junction. And synthetic leather — chosen vegan, so no two hides and no two cabinets could ever differ — is the quiet hero of the three: a viscoelastic layer bonded to the stiff materials, it works as a constrained damping layer, shearing microscopic panel motion into heat. The wood and metal make the structure disagree; the leather settles the argument. What the hand reads as upholstery, the cabinet employs as engineering.
The result is a structure in which no element can recruit its neighbours into a chorus: energy entering the box finds no shared frequency to amplify, and is instead divided among dissimilar materials and dissipated. The engineering rests on established structural principles and on the measured resonant behavior of the materials themselves — calculated construction, not folklore, and emphatically not tuned by ear.
Why not simply kill the cabinet outright? Because a fully deadened enclosure exacts its own price: music through an inert box can sound inert — dynamically reluctant, drained of the life the drivers worked to produce. And here is the part worth saying plainly: a single-material damped box would have been cheaper and far easier to build — one supplier, one process, no dissimilar joints to engineer. We chose three materials and the harder construction because it is the one that lets the music breathe.
Living With Any Amplifier, In Any Room
Everything above converges on two practical freedoms. The first is the room: controlled dispersion keeps the side walls out of the conversation, the treble adjustment trims the balance to the room you have, and the cabinet declines to add its own commentary — so the Atrium can stand near walls, in an ordinary living space, and still deliver the recording rather than the architecture. The second is the amplifier: 90.5 dB sensitivity into a linear 8 Ω load, minimum 7.6 Ω at 103 Hz, means a well-made amplifier of just 8 watts is enough. Single-ended triodes, push-pull valve amplifiers, small solid-state designs — the Atrium is not fussy about the company it keeps, only about the quality of it.
Treble Adjustment
Treble presentation is governed as much by your room's reflectivity as by the loudspeaker itself, so the Atrium provides four treble positions in deliberately fine quarter-decibel steps. Used together with toe-in, they let you tune the top end to a hard, lively room, a heavily furnished one, or simply to taste. There is no wrong position — only your room, and your ears.
PART V — SETUP
Placement
The Atrium was designed to tolerate real rooms, which means setup is a matter of refinement rather than rescue. Follow the geometry below, then let the test tracks confirm it.

Spacing. Place the speakers 1.8–3.0 m apart, measured tweeter to tweeter. Call this distance d.

Listening position. Sit further away than the speakers are apart: 1.1–1.4 × d from each speaker.

Walls. The Atrium can be positioned near side and front walls.

Toe-in. Recommended. Begin with each tweeter aimed directly at your ear; then adjust the treble position to taste. Alternative aiming references: on-axis, 50 cm behind your head, or 100 cm behind your head.

Listening height. Ear at tweeter level. At this height the Atrium renders its most articulate bass.

Break-in. Allow approximately 200 hours of normal playback before critical evaluation. Suspensions settle, and the sound gains ease and body as they do; the speaker you unbox is good, but it is not yet the speaker you bought.
Setup Test Tracks
Alexandria Audio provides three test tracks to confirm your installation:

Track 1 — Channels & centre focus. Verify left and right, then adjust until the centre voice occupies approximately one-third of the space between the speakers.

Track 2 — Absolute coherency. At 00:14, the sound of the dogs should appear at approximately your 3–5 o'clock position.

Track 3 — Spaciousness. Instruments should begin outside the left speaker and end outside the right speaker.

Living With the Atrium

Finish. Dust with a dry, soft cloth only — no solvents, no household cleaners. The finished surfaces are done the way Henry learned on the factory floor: spray, oven, graded sanding, water polish. Treat it like the furniture it descends from, because it is.

Leather. The synthetic leather surfaces ask even less: a soft cloth, barely damp with plain water if needed, then dry. No conditioners, no leather creams — it is engineering, not hide, and it will outlast both.

Drivers. Never touch the diaphragms.

Moving. Two-person lift. 40 kg each — respect your back and the cabinet corners equally.
